ASSOCIATION

Clovis Trouille

Emblematic character of the Belle Époque, close to Breton and Dali thanks to his non-conformism, Clovis Trouille had an impact on the history of art of the 20th century with his carnal and ferociously joyful works. His insolently erotic, anticlerical and antimilitary canvases led him to be shunned by the critics and struck down by the bourgeoisie, of whom he violently rejected "the morality, the religious imposture including that of the clergymen".

Surviving the First World War " with an eye full of anger, a heart impregnated with rage and hatred ", he was inspired by this experience to paint Remenbrance. This painting of an unprecedented violence, exhibited at the 1930 "Salon des Artistes et Ecrivains Révolutionnaires", struck Dali and opened the doors to the Surrealism Movement.

As an unclassifiable loner who preferred collecting scandals to sacrifying his art to the contingencies of an epoch or of a School, he also moved away from the Surrealists because of their scorn for the Old Masters, while claiming the heritage of the great Renaissance painters, formerly studied and copied at "Beaux Arts" Art College of the Picardy region. Along with this influence, some also see him as a precursor of Pop Art thanks to his nearly systematic use of photography and collages as a medium for his work.

Towards to end of his life, Clovis Trouille experienced a certain success with his painting "Oh ! Calcutta ! Calcutta !" which gave its title to a comedy musical that had sex as the main topic. Created in Broadway in 1969 by Kenneth Tynan, it starred Samuel Beckett as one of its librettists and John Lennon among its musicians.

In addition to the audacity of their subjects, the subversive works of Clovis Trouille succeeded in compelling recognition thanks to whim, oneiric power and exceptional colours.
